Kitchen islands are fantastic, and there’s so many designs to work with so that you can find one that benefits your style. With it being the central hub for the kitchen, understandably you want to have the best version of the island you can. It needs to be functional, but match the rest of the design flawlessly. You’re able to do so much with them too. From an additional stovetop, a sink, a mini-fridge, extra countertop space, and more. Here are some do’s and don’ts to consider with picking out the best kitchen island set up for your design.

The Do’s

  • Decide Your Island Needs: What do you need the kitchen island for? Do you just need extra countertop space? Maybe it’s for more storage or a new sink? Maybe you want additional seating without a full dining room. There are so many ways you can combine these functions to make your island work for the flow of the kitchen.
  • Make Sure It Fits: It’s easy to go a little overboard creating the perfect kitchen island. The biggest issue people run into is designing this huge island but not having enough space in the kitchen. On the flip side, if it’s too small, you won’t have enough room either. The recommended width of the kitchen island is 42 inches, but they can be custom-built to your specifications.
  • Get Electrical: Another benefit of a kitchen island is extra outlet space! Depending on the size of the island, you can have at least two electrical outlets installed. You won’t have to jump back and forth between countertops if you need to use the mixer, blender, or other portable appliances because there aren’t enough outlets.

  • The Right Design: Whether you want the kitchen island to be the focal piece of the kitchen or not, one issue that springs up is the island stands out way too much. Whether it’s installed during a full kitchen remodel or an addition by itself, the kitchen island should match the rest of the kitchen design

The Don’ts

  • Poor Seating: Kitchen islands are great for adding extra seating in the room. One issue that people run into is that the final design doesn’t accommodate the seating correctly. Generally, the height of the island is 36 inches which will allow 24-inch tall stools underneath. Each person should have 24 inches of space to themselves with at least a 12-inch overhang of the countertop so legs can fit under comfortably.
  • No Storage Space: There are several functions your countertop can have, but one that can get accidentally overlooked is storage. It’s very easy to add in a few drawers and cabinets to an island to make the most out of the entire space.
